An oil cooler is a heat exchanger separate from an engine’s main radiator. It extracts heat to prevent the oil from overheating and helps maintain optimal operating temperature. Cooling the oil improves the engine and transmission’s service life.
Oil coolers are often situated at the front of the vehicle and can transfer heat using oil-to-water (internal to radiator tank) or oil-to-air (external) methods. Which oil cooler do I need?
If replacing an existing oil cooler that is worn out or damaged, it’s usually just a matter of identifying the vehicle or machine it was fitted to.
However, it’s recommended that measurements and photos (including any writing or numbers) be taken so this information can be matched.

Are all oil coolers the same?
No. Some oil coolers are mounted inside the tank on the bottom of the radiator (common on passenger vehicles) and transfer heat from the oil to the coolant in the engine cooling system.
Other oil coolers operate like radiators, with hot oil passing through them and heat being released to ambient air.

Does a vehicle with an automatic transmission and used for towing require an oil cooler upgrade?
Usually yes. Frequent and heavy towing adds extra load on the transmission generating heat. This can be more than the typical load that vehicle designers planned for, so there is a risk of overheating and damaging the transmission if a larger or extra cooler is not fitted.
